Ezekiel 40:49 Meaning The Length of the Porch Was Twenty

The length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the width eleven cubits; even by the steps by which they went up to it. There were pillars by the posts, one on this side, and another on that side.

What does Ezekiel 40:49 mean?

The temple being measured is the human body, and this porch is its threshold, the entryway of consciousness where a person first crosses from the outer life toward the inner sanctuary. Every dimension given is a weighing of the finished form of the body against what it is built to hold.

The temple being measured is the human body, and this porch is its threshold, the entryway of consciousness where a person first crosses from the outer life toward the inner sanctuary. Every dimension given is a weighing of the finished form of the body against what it is built to hold. The steps mean that the way in is not flat but graded: awareness climbs by degrees, rising through levels rather than arriving all at once.

The 2 pillars standing on either side are the paired columns of energy that rise along the spine and support the whole structure, the balance of the 2 sides through which the ascent is even made possible.

Porch: the threshold of the body-temple, the vestibule of consciousness where the outer life is left and the inward turn begins Steps: the graded degrees by which awareness climbs, rising through levels rather than reaching the height at once Pillars: the 2 columns of energy that rise along the spine and hold the body upright, the balanced left and right that let the ascent take place 20 cubits: the doubled fullness of the senses, the outward measure of the form that must be passed through 11 cubits: the number just beyond the completion of 10, the point of crossing over from one order into the next

Live Ezekiel 40:49 today

  1. Before you start your day, stand still for thirty seconds in a doorway of your own home before you pick up your phone. Let it be a real crossing from asleep to awake instead of a slide from one screen to the next.
  2. Pause for one breath outside the room where someone is waiting for you, your family at dinner, a colleague at a desk. You arrive as a whole person instead of trailing the last conversation in behind you.
  3. On your commute home, pick a landmark and make it the line where work ends. Crossing it, let your shoulders drop and let the open evening be what you are walking into.

What do I carry across the threshold with me that was meant to be left outside?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 11

The value of a room is the empty space inside it, and the use of a door is the gap, not the frame. The threshold matters because of what it lets you pass into.

Hinduism · the Upanishads

The body is spoken of as a city with gates, and the dweller inside it as the one worth finding. You stand in the entryway every time you turn your attention inward.

Sufism · the gate of the heart

The Sufi teachers describe approaching the heart as approaching a courtyard before a chamber. You pause at the entrance, you leave the street behind you, and only then do you go in.
