Galatians 2:13 Meaning And the Rest of the Jews Joined

And the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.

What does Galatians 2:13 mean?

One respected man pulls back to please a watching crowd, and the pretense spreads until even the generous-hearted are swept along. The disease is showing off in reverse: acting for the eyes of people instead of living before God, and it moves through a group like a current.

Sufism

One respected man pulls back to please a watching crowd, and the pretense spreads until even the generous-hearted are swept along. The disease is showing off in reverse: acting for the eyes of people instead of living before God, and it moves through a group like a current. The cure is sincerity done in private, choosing to eat at the same table whether anyone approving is looking or not.

God is present here in the one gaze that the crowd's approval was trying to replace. Turned toward that gaze, a person no longer needs the room's applause, and the pretense that carried away even the best loses its pull the moment its true audience is remembered.

Live Galatians 2:13 today

  1. In a group chat today where everyone is piling on, do not add the easy line that would fit in. Say nothing, or say the quieter true thing.
  2. Sit with, eat with, or openly reply to the person your circle has cooled toward, and do it the same way you would if nobody could see.
  3. When you feel the room turning and your own position starting to drift with it, pause before you speak and ask what you thought ten minutes ago.

Would you still be saying this if the people you want to impress walked out of the room?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

He mocked the man who ran from his own shadow, faster and faster, until he dropped dead, when sitting still in the shade would have ended it. The crowd's watching only has the power you give it by running.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He reminded himself that most people's opinions are borrowed from other people's opinions, passing around like weather. Do not reshape your conduct for a current.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

In a place where no one is behaving like a person, be a person. The teaching assumes the room will already be sliding when you have to decide.
