Galatians 2:6 Meaning But From Those Who Were Reputed

But from those who were reputed to be important—whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn’t show partiality to man—they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,

What does Galatians 2:6 mean?

God does not look at your outward forms but at your hearts: the measure is inward The Prophet said that God looks past bodies and wealth to the heart underneath. Standing in front of someone with a title, a person shrinks a little, and the title does the work the words should do.

God does not look at your outward forms but at your hearts: the measure is inward The Prophet said that God looks past bodies and wealth to the heart underneath. Standing in front of someone with a title, a person shrinks a little, and the title does the work the words should do. Under this measure the impressive one and the unknown one are weighed the same, so impressiveness stops settling anything.

Ḥubb al-jāh: love of standing among people Al-Ghazali counted the hunger for a good position in other people's hearts as one of the two great wreckers of a life. The hunger shows up as wanting the recognized names on your side, wanting their nod before you trust your own work. Once a person sees the hunger plainly, approval from the well regarded becomes a nice thing to have rather than the thing that decides.

Asbāb: the means God works through Sufis use this word for the people and situations that deliver something into a life. Someone helped by an important figure can end up owing them everything, measuring their own worth by how close they stand to that figure. Treating the person as the delivery driver rather than the owner of the package keeps the thanks warm and the debt small.

ʿIlm ladunnī: knowledge given straight from God The Quran speaks of a servant taught from God's own presence, with no teacher in between. Anyone who has learned something that way meets an awkward moment when the recognized authorities look it over and have nothing to add. The awkwardness eases once they stop waiting for a stamp of approval, since they already know where the knowledge came from.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Sincerity means doing a thing for God with no side glance at the audience. The side glance is what makes a person soften a message for the well connected, or hold back until the respected ones bless the work. When that glance drops away, the work comes out the same whether the important people approve of it or ignore it.

Live Galatians 2:6 today

  1. Reread something you wrote and softened because an important person was on the thread. Put the honest version back.
  2. Today, give the same quality of attention to the person serving you coffee as you would to someone whose approval you want. Same eye contact, same unhurried voice.
  3. When the most senior person in the meeting says something you think is wrong, weigh it on what it says, not on who said it, and answer from there.

Whose nod are you still waiting for before you trust your own work?
