PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Baptism is a going under. The anxious self a person clings to is lowered into the water and, for a moment, released. What comes back up is no longer run by that small center.

To put on Christ is to wear an image that lives in everyone: a whole, reconciled person in whom the opposing forces within are held together. Taking that image as one's own changes where a life is centered. A person stops living from the small, driven self and starts living from the larger, more complete self carried within. That new center is what putting on Christ brings about.

Live Galatians 3:27 today

  1. Change one thing about how you start your day, the first ten minutes, and do it without your phone in your hand. Small change of clothes, see who is underneath.
  2. When someone brings you a problem today, try listening as the calmest person you know would listen, not as the version of you that is tired and has opinions. Borrow the better self on purpose.
  3. In the moment you want to send the sharp reply, put the phone face down and count to twenty. Let the heat go under the water and see what comes back up.

Whose self am I running on today, the anxious one that got me here, or a larger one I could step into?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Dogen

Body and mind are dropped away. What remains is not a smaller person but a life no longer organized around defending itself.

Sufism · Rumi

Die before you die, the Sufis say. The self you cling to is lowered under, and what comes back is wider than what went down.

Bhagavad Gita 2

As a person sets aside worn clothing and puts on new, the deeper self sets aside one form and takes another. What is essential is not what you were wearing.
