Galatians 4:7 Meaning So You Are No Longer a Bondservant

So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

What does Galatians 4:7 mean?

If I serve you for fear of hell or hope of heaven, deny me both: love as the only motive Rabia prayed this out loud, and Sufis have repeated it ever since. Anyone who serves to stay out of trouble is still keeping accounts, still watching for the owner's mood, still working off a debt.

If I serve you for fear of hell or hope of heaven, deny me both: love as the only motive Rabia prayed this out loud, and Sufis have repeated it ever since. Anyone who serves to stay out of trouble is still keeping accounts, still watching for the owner's mood, still working off a debt. When the fear and the payout both drop away, the same work continues, now coming from wanting to be near someone rather than from wanting to be safe.

Ḥurriyya: Freedom For the Sufis, freedom means being owned by nothing except God. Ibn Ata Allah gave the test plainly: you belong to whatever you crave, and you are free of whatever you have stopped chasing. The weight of serving comes from wanting something the master controls, so when that wanting loosens, the work stops feeling like a debt.

Uns: Ease in God's company Al-Ghazali describes the turn where dread of God settles into feeling at home with him. Fear keeps a person formal, careful with every word, always half expecting to be sent away. When that lifts, prayer becomes plain talking, and the one praying no longer braces for a cold answer.

Losing heart after a slip shows you were leaning on your own record: the sign of relying on deeds Ibn Ata Allah offered this as a check anyone can run on themselves. A person whose standing rests on performance is only ever as secure as their last good week, so one failure sinks them. When the standing was given instead of earned, a bad day stays a bad day and does not become a verdict on the person.

Wirātha: Inheritance Ibn Arabi holds that the friends of God receive what they receive as heirs, always through one prophet whose path they walk. The Prophet said the scholars are the heirs of the prophets, and the estate handed down is knowledge, not money. Someone in that line does not build their closeness to God from nothing; they come into what another already had.

The behaviors a person keeps after their standing changes are the ones proving they never accepted the new name.

The work a person does to secure their place shows precisely what place they believe they hold. A hired man believes his position is contingent, so the belief sets a low current of fear, the fear reads every instruction as a test of whether he stays, and the testing compounds into a life of proving.

Adoption changes the arithmetic, since nothing he does buys the position: the standing is God's to confer and arrives through Christ from outside the man, which is why it holds on mornings he cannot generate it himself. Servant reflexes that outlive the name change mark a label not yet accepted, and each one keeps a man living at the old standard while the inheritance sits untouched.

Live Galatians 4:7 today

  1. Do one thing today you would normally do for credit, and tell no one you did it. Replying to the hard email, washing the pan, taking the earlier shift, done without anyone to log it.
  2. With one person in your life, drop the running tally of who owes who. If you have been keeping quiet score on texts answered or favors returned, let today's be uneven on purpose.
  3. When you get that message that makes your chest tighten, the one from your boss or your landlord or your mother, read it without checking whether you are in trouble. Answer the actual question in it, not the verdict you think it carries.

What would you still be doing today if nobody were keeping track of it?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Do the work that is yours to do without clutching at what it pays out. The act done for its own sake, free of the eye on reward, is the one that leaves you unburdened.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You belong to whatever you cannot bear to lose, so anyone who wants nothing from a person is beyond that person's power. Freedom is not getting your way; it is no longer needing it.

Zhuangzi

A man who would not take the king's offer of high office said he preferred to be a live turtle in the mud than a dead one honored on an altar. What you accept from a master is also what hands him the leash.
