Galatians 5:25 Meaning If We Live by the Spirit

If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

What does Galatians 5:25 mean?

There is a difference between glimpsing stillness and living from it. Many touch that deeper aliveness in a quiet moment and then step back into the stream of compulsive thought, as if the insight belonged only to the cushion or the church.

Ego v. Being

There is a difference between glimpsing stillness and living from it. Many touch that deeper aliveness in a quiet moment and then step back into the stream of compulsive thought, as if the insight belonged only to the cushion or the church.

To walk in the Spirit is to carry that same awake presence into ordinary movement, into washing a dish, crossing a street, speaking to a stranger. The teaching is plain: whatever depth you have found, let it become the ground you actually stand on, not a memory you visit.

Live Galatians 5:25 today

  1. Pick one ordinary thing today, brushing your teeth, making toast, walking to the car, and be all the way there for it. No podcast, no planning the rest of the day.
  2. When someone starts talking to you, put the phone face down and actually look at them. Two minutes of that is worth more than an hour of half attention.
  3. In the thick of a busy stretch, take the stairs or the walk to the kitchen at normal speed and feel your feet. The calm you found this morning is supposed to come with you into the rush.

Where do I keep my quiet self on a shelf instead of taking it into the rest of my day?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. The depth shows up in the ordinary work, or it does not show up.

Buddhism · Thich Nhat Hanh

He taught washing the dishes to wash the dishes, not to get to the cup of tea afterward. The whole practice fits inside a sink of warm water.

Sufism

The dervishes say the heart should stay with God while the hands stay in the work. Your presence is meant to walk around with you, not sit in a corner.
