Genesis 13:6 · World English Bible

Genesis 13:6 Meaning The Land Was Not Able to Bear

The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together; for their possessions were so great that they couldn’t live together.

What does Genesis 13:6 mean?

This is the mind divided by what it has come to call its own, unable to hold two claims of possession in one place. When substance is treated as a thing to keep, it crowds out peace, for the belief in owning breeds the sense that another's presence is a rivalry.

This is the mind divided by what it has come to call its own, unable to hold two claims of possession in one place. When substance is treated as a thing to keep, it crowds out peace, for the belief in owning breeds the sense that another's presence is a rivalry. Scarcity is not in the land; it is in a mind convinced there is not enough.

The inability to dwell together is the fruit of separation, where accumulation sets one against another. What looks like a shortage of ground is really the ego's certainty of competition. A mind that saw its abundance as something to share rather than to guard would find the same land wide enough for all, because the crowding was never in the place but in the thought.

Land: the shared field of mind that seems too small to hold all, the common ground scarcity makes feel divided Substance: the possessions the ego gathers and guards, the sense of owning that sets one mind against another

The higher aspiration and the clinging lower mind have both grown so heavy with acquisition that a single inner ground can no longer hold them side by side, and a separation becomes inevitable. Abram is the ascending self and Lot the veiling lower nature; their swollen substance is the accumulated experience and possession each has gathered, and abundance itself forces the parting that scarcity never did. The field of a person cannot carry 2 masters once each has grown great in its own direction.

The land is the whole body-consciousness, finite and unable to feed 2 expanding claims at once, so the paths that traveled as one must at last divide.

  1. Open the app where you keep score, the bank, the follower count, the inbox, and look at it once without doing anything about it. Then close it and ask whether today actually lacks anything.
  2. Give away something small you were quietly holding on to: the good seat, credit for the idea, the last of the coffee. See whether you feel smaller afterward.
  3. When someone gets the thing you wanted, the client, the promotion, the praise, let the sting arrive and do not act on it. Their gain did not come out of your pocket, though it will feel like it did for about ten minutes.

Where do I feel crowded right now, and is the room really too small?

Tao Te Ching

The one who knows when enough is enough is never poor. Grasping for more is the one reliable way to feel short.

Buddhism

The thirst itself is the suffering, not the lack. A mind that always wants more lives in scarcity no matter how full the room is.

Stoicism · Seneca

It is not the man who has little who is poor, but the man who craves more. Wealth measured by appetite is always a deficit.
