Feelings will not hold a promise, so the serious ones get stored in something that cannot be undone. A commitment that lives only in how a person feels has to be won again every morning, and on the mornings the feeling is absent it loses the argument; inconsistent action compounds into nothing, which is why durable commitments get moved out of the emotions and into the body, where nothing has to be re-argued.

SELF-HELP
Feelings will not hold a promise, so the serious ones get stored in something that cannot be undone.
A commitment that lives only in how a person feels has to be won again every morning, and on the mornings the feeling is absent it loses the argument; inconsistent action compounds into nothing, which is why durable commitments get moved out of the emotions and into the body, where nothing has to be re-argued.
God asks for no annual renewal and no remembered resolve. A cut in the flesh holds whether the man feels faithful that week or not, and it is set on the very part of the body through which the promised offspring would come, so the covenant is signed on the means of keeping it. What a reversible commitment costs is the energy of deciding it over and over, until one of those decisions goes the other way.
Self-Help lens
What am I spending my strength deciding again every single morning?
Do not say you will philosophize, be a philosopher, and build the habit into the day so it stops asking for your permission. What depends on a mood loses to the mood.
The deepest commitments are built into wood and doorposts rather than left to memory, so they hold on the days nobody feels anything. The object keeps the promise when the person is tired.
A vow is taken once and relied on after, which is exactly why it is taken in words before witnesses. Re-deciding every morning is how a practice quietly ends.
