Genesis 17:5 Meaning Your Name Will No More Be Called

Your name will no more be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

What does Genesis 17:5 mean?

A name is the nature of a thing. The change of Abram to Abraham is the change from a man who merely holds a promise unseen into one who has become a father.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

A name is the nature of a thing. The change of Abram to Abraham is the change from a man who merely holds a promise unseen into one who has become a father. Abraham is the state of awareness that believes the promise before any evidence appears. The promise itself is the son who will be born within, the resurrection of the self as the source of its own life. To be called the father of many nations is to become the ground out of which every state of being is raised, not the parent of tribes on a map.

The added letter in the name is the breath, the awareness of being, entering the man and making him fruitful. No good conduct earns this. A father is what he already is, and he lives from the certainty that what was promised has been done.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

A single breath-letter added to the name multiplies the life force and turns one nature into the parent of many. The 5th Hebrew letter, tied to breath and to generative increase, is set into the old name, and what was contained and single becomes the origin of countless states within a person.

The renaming is a change worked in the body itself, the quiet vital principle opened by breath until it can bring forth. The added letter is the moment the inner life gains the power to multiply, so that one seat of consciousness fathers the whole crowd of thoughts and forces that fill a life.

Abraham: the inner life opened by the added breath-letter, made able to bring forth many states from one. Many nations: the crowd of thoughts and forces that pour out of a single seat of consciousness once it is quickened.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A person will live up to the name they accept long before there is any evidence they should.

The need to stay consistent with how a person defines themselves runs stronger than fear, which is why God changes the label first and lets the life catch up. Identity sets what a man will attempt, the attempt sets the emotion he lives in, and that emotion decides the next attempt.

A man with a son by the servant and none by his wife had every reason to shrink the promise to the size of what he already held. Father of a multitude is unusable as a wish and entirely workable as a name a man has to answer to every day. Refuse the larger label and a person spends their strength defending the life already in hand.

Live Genesis 17:5 today

  1. Pick one thing you keep saying you are trying to be, patient, generous, steady. Today, drop the trying and answer to the finished name instead: I am a patient person. Then let the day test it without you taking the word back.
  2. Speak to one person today as the person they are becoming rather than the one their record suggests. A kid, a coworker, a friend who keeps slipping. Address the better version by name and watch what rises to meet it.
  3. When something goes wrong and the old label jumps up, I always mess this up, say the new name back to yourself before you answer the email or the text. One breath, the true name, then reply.

What have I been calling myself that I never agreed to be?
