What does Genesis 18:20 mean?

A city can generate a cry that rises on its own, an accumulated weight of wrong that finally announces itself. Sodom's sin is not a private matter that stayed hidden; it built until Being itself registered the imbalance, and the reckoning followed as a consequence, not an intrusion.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A city can generate a cry that rises on its own, an accumulated weight of wrong that finally announces itself. Sodom's sin is not a private matter that stayed hidden; it built until Being itself registered the imbalance, and the reckoning followed as a consequence, not an intrusion. When the proper order of things is violated deeply enough and long enough, catastrophe is not sent so much as summoned. The place calls its own judgment down.

And it is always, in some measure, your fault. Stay on the path and be careful. The moment a man starts to deviate and tells himself the small corruptions do not count, they accumulate exactly as a city's do. What looks like sudden disaster is usually a long deviation coming due. The cry that rises against a place is the sum of choices no one thought were being counted.

Live Genesis 18:20 today

  1. Name the small thing you have been letting slide, the receipts you do not log, the thing you keep not saying, the corner you cut at work, and handle it today while it is still small.
  2. Tell one person the truth you have been rounding off for them. The softened version has been quietly adding up on both sides.
  3. When you are tired tonight and the easy slip is right there, the thing you always do and always regret, say out loud that this one counts. Because it does, and so does every one before it.

What have you told yourself does not count, that has been counting all along?

Buddhism

Karma is not punishment arriving from outside. It is the accumulated weight of small repeated actions finally showing its shape.

Tao Te Ching 64

The tree that takes two arms to hold started as a tiny shoot. So did the collapse, and the time to deal with it was when it was still small.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that every habit is strengthened by the acts that match it, so each small concession trains the next one. Stop feeding it and the habit starves.
