Genesis 18:24 Meaning What If There Are Fifty Righteous Within

What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?

What does Genesis 18:24 mean?

The mind bargains here, hoping that enough innocence can be found to save the whole from judgment. It still thinks in fear's arithmetic, weighing the righteous against the wicked as though the place must be earned back from condemnation.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind bargains here, hoping that enough innocence can be found to save the whole from judgment. It still thinks in fear's arithmetic, weighing the righteous against the wicked as though the place must be earned back from condemnation. But the very search for innocence within the city is the beginning of a kinder sight.

What this pleading really uncovers is that innocence, once looked for, is what holds the whole together and spares it. A mind willing to seek the good in what it was ready to condemn finds that the good was reason enough not to condemn at all.

The city: the whole self holding the condemned and the spared together, the mind fear would sentence as one. The fifty righteous: the innocence still present within the self, the good the mind can find if it looks instead of judging.

Live Genesis 18:24 today

  1. Take the part of your own life you are hardest on, your work, your body, your temper, and list three things about it that are genuinely good. Read them back once.
  2. With a family member who frustrates you, say out loud one specific thing they do well. Not a compliment sandwich, just the true part on its own.
  3. On a bad commute, when the whole city seems hostile, look for one decent act: someone letting a car merge, someone holding a door. One is enough to break the story.

What am I ready to condemn before I have finished looking at it?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Metta

You train the heart by looking for what is good in a person until the looking becomes natural. What you keep seeking in others is what you slowly teach yourself to see.

Tao Te Ching

The sage does not throw anyone out. Even the person everyone else gave up on is kept, because nothing in the world is finally useless.

Judaism

Tradition holds that the whole world is sustained by a handful of quiet righteous people nobody can name. The little good hidden inside a place is what keeps the place standing.
