The visitors choosing to stay in the street rather than the house is the spirit remaining in the higher realm, the pathway above ordinary thought, instead of coming down into the ready dwelling below. The house is a person's own prepared inner self, and the street is the raised way that runs over the common traffic of the mind. Washing the feet is the cleansing of the lowest point, the part that touches the earth, and earth here is the mind in its ground-level state.
When the spirit answers that it will abide in the street, it holds its place on the high road above thought. It does not descend yet into the lower rooms; it stays where the way rises, keeping to the level above ordinary thinking through the night.
