Genesis 19:4 · World English Bible

Genesis 19:4 Meaning But Before They Lay Down

But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.

What does Genesis 19:4 mean?

When guilt is loose in a mind it does not come as single fears but massed, old and young, from every quarter, until it seems the whole world stands ready to break in. One house shelters two guests the mind has begun to welcome, and the crowd circling it is not other people but the buried belief in separation, come to reclaim what it lost.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When guilt is loose in a mind it does not come as single fears but massed, old and young, from every quarter, until it seems the whole world stands ready to break in. One house shelters two guests the mind has begun to welcome, and the crowd circling it is not other people but the buried belief in separation, come to reclaim what it lost.

What looks like a city besieging a home is one mind surrounding its own quiet place with everything it has refused to look at. The siege presses from outside only because the guilt was thrown there. Seen plainly, the whole encircling multitude is a single choice for fear, and a mind can choose again.

House: the sheltered place in the mind where a truer perception has just begun to be welcomed and kept safe. Men of Sodom: the massed thoughts of guilt and separation, dressed as an outside threat, that circle back to reclaim the mind they once ruled. City: the whole condition of a mind that has taken fear for its home and now defends it.

Live Genesis 19:4 today

  1. When the dread arrives at once, bills and health and that unanswered message all pressing together, write the fears down as separate lines. They crowd you only while they are a blur.
  2. If you feel ganged up on in a group chat, read it again counting the actual people. Usually it is two voices and your own imagination filling the room.
  3. When notifications stack up and your chest tightens, put the phone face down for five minutes. The pile is not an attack, it is a list that will wait.

How much of what seems to surround me is coming from inside?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The thoughts you rehearse become the world you live in. What feels like a crowd closing in is often one mind repeating itself with many voices.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

It is not the event that surrounds you but your judgment about it, and the judgment is yours to drop. The siege is inside the walls you are defending.

Vedanta

The frightening shape in the dim room turns out to be a coat on a chair. Fear is real while it lasts, but its object was never what you took it for.
