CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

One man steps outside and pulls the door closed behind him, and in that small act the whole meaning of civilization is concentrated. On one side of that door is the guest under the sacred obligation of hospitality. On the other side is a mob dissolved into brutal immediate gratification, dysregulated behavior standing outside the confines of any civilized structure whatsoever. Lot steps between them. He places his own body on the threshold, one man against the crowd.

The shut door is the thin membrane that separates order from chaos, welcome from the sterile hostility that inverts everything welcome should be. Sodom is not condemned for a single act but for the collapse of that membrane everywhere at once. A society perishes when nothing sacred remains to hold the appetite of the crowd in check. Someone still has to stand at the door.

Live Genesis 19:6 today

  1. Decide now, before it comes up, what you will not do no matter who asks. Having the answer ready is the whole difference when the moment arrives.
  2. Stand between someone and the group when they are being torn into, at dinner, at work, in the thread. You do not need a speech, just getting in the way is enough.
  3. When a room turns on someone and the easy move is to laugh along, do not. Change the subject, ask a question, leave the joke unanswered.

What door are you standing at, that stays shut only because you are there?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

He taught that the forms of courtesy are not decoration, they are what holds a society together. Abandon the forms and the appetite underneath has nothing left to restrain it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said there is a line a person simply does not cross, whatever the crowd is doing, and finding that line is most of the work. The man who has one is the one who can stand still.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

In a place where no one else is acting like a human being, be one. The lack of company is the reason it matters.
