Genesis 19:9 Meaning They Said

They said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now we will deal worse with you than with them!” They pressed hard on the man Lot, and came near to break the door.

What does Genesis 19:9 mean?

The ego cannot bear correction and turns hardest on the part of the mind that would gently set things right. Stand back, it says, and he would be a judge, resenting the quiet teacher as an intruder with no standing to redeem.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego cannot bear correction and turns hardest on the part of the mind that would gently set things right. Stand back, it says, and he would be a judge, resenting the quiet teacher as an intruder with no standing to redeem. The crowd presses harder precisely because a saner voice has spoken, for guilt grows loudest when it is about to be released.

What nearly breaks is the door of the mind's last shelter, the thin wall between fear and the peace still kept within. The pressure feels like the world bearing down. It is one mind refusing its own correction, and the door holds only as long as that correction is chosen again.

Door: the fragile threshold between the mind's remaining peace and the guilt that would flood in, the point where the choice for love is still being made. Lot: the gentle corrective voice within, resented and pressed upon for daring to judge the wrong a dream.

Live Genesis 19:9 today

  1. When you decide something small and good, no phone at dinner, bed at eleven, the loudest objection will come from inside. Hear it, then do the thing anyway.
  2. If a friend or family member mocks the change you are making, resist defending it. Let it go unargued and keep doing it; the doing is the only case worth making.
  3. When the pressure at work spikes right as you are about to hold a boundary, read the spike as the last push rather than proof you were wrong. Hold the line one more hour.

What is pushing hardest on me right now, and is it because something is about to change?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Expect to be mocked when you begin living differently, and keep going anyway. The ridicule is a sign you touched something, not a reason to stop.

Taoism

When a lesser person hears of the way, they laugh out loud. If no one laughed, you would have reason to wonder whether it was the way at all.

Zen

The hardest resistance often shows up right before something gives. A mind pushes back loudest at the moment it is about to let go.
