Genesis 20:11 · World English Bible

Genesis 20:11 Meaning Abraham Said

Abraham said, “Because I thought, ‘Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife’s sake.’

What does Genesis 20:11 mean?

A mind afraid decides in advance what the world will be and then meets only what it decided. Surely there is no love in this place, it thinks, and surely they will kill me, and from that lone thought it builds the whole danger it then defends against.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind afraid decides in advance what the world will be and then meets only what it decided. Surely there is no love in this place, it thinks, and surely they will kill me, and from that lone thought it builds the whole danger it then defends against. The threat was manufactured by the expectation; the place was judged empty of love before a single soul in it had spoken.

This is how guilt makes a hostile world, by projecting its own fear outward and calling the projection reality. A mind convinced it will be attacked arranges its life around that conviction. Change the thought that there is no love here, and the danger it seemed to prove has nowhere left to stand.

This place: the world as the fearful mind has prejudged it, emptied of love in advance and expected to attack. Wife: the treasure the mind believes it must lie to protect, the thing over which it foresees its own destruction.

Live Genesis 20:11 today

  1. Before a thing you are dreading today, a call, an appointment, a visit, catch the sentence you are telling yourself about how it will go. Write it down if you can, then go in without defending against it.
  2. Pick the person you have already decided is going to be difficult, and give them a fresh start they do not know about. Ask them one real question and actually listen to the answer.
  3. When a short email or a flat text lands and your stomach drops, try the generous reading first: they were busy, they were tired, they meant nothing by it. Reply to that version and watch what happens.

What have I already decided about today, and what if I am wrong?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You are not hurt by what happens but by the story you attach to it. Drop the verdict you reached in advance and the injury has nothing to stand on.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

We are made by our thoughts; we become what we think. A mind rehearsing attack will find enemies in a room full of friends.

Tao Te Ching

The one who meets the world armed teaches it to arm itself. Go out unguarded and there is nothing for hostility to grip.
