What does Genesis 21:19 mean?

The rescue was present the whole time, and healing came the instant the mind's eyes were opened to see what despair had hidden. The well did not appear; it was always there, and only the conviction of abandonment kept it out of sight.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The rescue was present the whole time, and healing came the instant the mind's eyes were opened to see what despair had hidden. The well did not appear; it was always there, and only the conviction of abandonment kept it out of sight. This is the miracle in its plainest form: nothing in the world changed, and yet everything changed, because the mind at last looked and saw.

When sight returns, supply is found where the mind swore there was none, and the hope thought dead is given life. The whole ordeal was never a lack of water but a blindness to it, undone the moment the mind was willing to see.

Hagar: the part of the mind whose eyes are opened, now seeing the help it had been unable to find. Well of water: the abundant supply that was present all along, hidden only by the belief that the mind was forsaken. Lad: the hope restored and given drink, the life renewed the moment the mind saw what was always there.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The well was already there. It did not appear because of her weeping; it had been present all along, waiting beside her while she was lost in the story of her despair. Grief and fear had narrowed her sight until she could see only the problem and none of the life surrounding it.

To have your eyes opened is simply to become present. When the noise of anguished thinking grows quiet, even for a moment, you begin to notice what was always available to you. She did not travel far to find the water. She saw what was near her the instant she stopped being consumed by her mind.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A collapsed state edits what a person can see, and what they cannot see they will never reach for.

Despair runs a filter on the senses. It fixes attention on the ending already accepted, attention decides what registers as real, and a woman can sit within steps of water while filing the entire desert as empty.

God opens her eyes rather than digging a well, which means the supply was never the shortage and the limit sat inside what she believed was available to her. Everyone carries a boundary like that around their own resources, drawn during the worst hour of their life and never revisited once the hour passed. A person who keeps it pays in resources they already own and never spend.

Live Genesis 21:19 today

  1. Write down three things you already have that you were treating as missing, the savings, the skill, the person who said yes. Read the list slowly, out loud if you can.
  2. Ask one person today for the small help you have been too proud or too hopeless to ask for. The ride, the introduction, the half hour of their time. The well is often just a text message away.
  3. Next time you are stuck, in a queue, in traffic, in a meeting going nowhere, look around for the one thing already available to you instead of the thing you wish you had.

What help is sitting right in front of me that I have sworn is not there?

Zen

A man searched everywhere for the ox he was riding. Nothing had to be fetched; the search ended when he looked down.

Tao Te Ching

Water is everywhere and asks for nothing, which is exactly why we overlook it. The most ordinary thing present is usually the thing that saves us.

What you are hunting for across the world is hunting for you, and sits nearer than your own breath. The distance was never real, only unexamined.
