What does Genesis 22:16 mean?

To withhold nothing, not even the son, the dearest attachment a person carries, is the whole offering. The son is what you hold closest, the state or self you would least willingly give up, and its surrender is the sacrifice that counts.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

To withhold nothing, not even the son, the dearest attachment a person carries, is the whole offering. The son is what you hold closest, the state or self you would least willingly give up, and its surrender is the sacrifice that counts. God swears by himself for one reason. The one who promises and the one who keeps the promise are a single being, and no higher power stands above the source to be called on.

This selfless giving, love laying down what it loves most, weaves the garment that the awakened self will wear, the scarlet robe that in these writings means love itself. The willingness to let go for love's sake is what clothes a person as the Christ within, the awareness that he is God formed and risen in a man. What is offered without holding back is what fits him for that higher state.

Live Genesis 22:16 today

  1. Find the thing you were privately keeping in reserve, the apology you were not going to make, the savings you were not going to touch, the forgiveness you were half giving. Give the whole of it today.
  2. Do something generous for one person and tell nobody, not your partner, not a group chat, no photo. Let it stay only between you and them.
  3. When a conversation turns tense, drop the last card you were holding, the thing you were saving to prove you were wronged. Let the argument end without it.

Where am I giving almost everything, and keeping back the piece that would cost me?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 12

Krishna says the one who gives up the fruits of what he does finds peace right away. Holding a share back for yourself is what keeps the restlessness going.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said to hold everything you love as if you were a guest who will hand it back. Nothing you keep a grip on is actually yours.

Buddhism

Generosity is counted whole only when no trace of expecting anything is left in it. A gift given with a hook attached is still a trade.
