Genesis 24:14 Meaning Let It Happen

Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ then she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.

Decide in advance what an answer will look like, or you will meet it and call it a coincidence.

A question set down before the evidence arrives turns the mind into an instrument with a specific aim. Asking for water poured out for ten animals nobody was obliged to serve points the search at generosity under no obligation, which no stranger can fake in the time it takes to be asked, rather than at whatever the eye can price in a second.

The servant asks God for a sign and then defines the sign, which is why he can trust what he sees. A person who prays for guidance without describing what guidance would look like receives it, argues with it, and spends years unsure whether anything was ever given.

  1. Before the next decision you are unsure about, write down what a good answer would actually look like. Two or three specific signs, so you can recognize it instead of debating it later.
  2. When you are getting to know someone, at work or otherwise, watch how they treat the person who cannot do anything for them. The waiter, the new hire, the person behind them in the grocery line, that is the real information.
  3. Today, when you catch yourself asking for guidance in your head without saying what you are looking for, stop and say it. Even one line in your notes app, so that when it comes you will not call it luck.

What am I asking for without ever having said what the answer would look like?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus taught that you must first say what you want to be, then do what follows from it. Naming the standard in advance is what makes recognizing it possible later.

Buddhism · right intention

The path puts intention before action for a reason. A clear aim set beforehand decides what your attention will actually register when the moment comes.

Judaism · the Talmud

The sages taught that a person is led along the road they themselves wish to walk. What you set your heart on in advance shapes what then opens in front of you.
