To say 'I know not the day of my death' is to speak the plain truth every mind would rather avoid. The ego cannot bear such uncertainty; it wants to secure the future, to control what cannot be controlled.

EGO & BEING
To say 'I know not the day of my death' is to speak the plain truth every mind would rather avoid. The ego cannot bear such uncertainty; it wants to secure the future, to control what cannot be controlled. So it spends the present anxiously reaching toward a tomorrow that never arrives as imagined.
But not knowing the hour is not a curse. It is life turning your face back toward the only place you have ever lived, which is now. Death is certain and its timing hidden precisely so that you stop postponing your life and give your attention to this moment, the one thing that is truly yours.
Ego v. Being lens
What are you postponing as though you had been given a date?
You could leave life this minute. Let that decide what you do and say now, instead of what you promise yourself for later.
Don't ask about tomorrow; it hasn't come. Yesterday is gone. Today is the only ground you can actually stand on.
Asked about preparing for death, the teacher said: finish your breakfast. The hour is unknown so the meal in front of you is the whole practice.
