Genesis 27:35 Meaning He Said

He said, “Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing.”

What does Genesis 27:35 mean?

A mind persuaded that its good has been carried off by a brother has found the perfect villain, for now its lack is someone else's fault and its guilt can be thrown clear across to the one who seemed to take. This is attack in its earliest form, the guilt within seen in a mirror and given a face to blame.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind persuaded that its good has been carried off by a brother has found the perfect villain, for now its lack is someone else's fault and its guilt can be thrown clear across to the one who seemed to take. This is attack in its earliest form, the guilt within seen in a mirror and given a face to blame.

What looks like theft between two selves is really one mind refusing to own what it feels, and the brother named as thief is carrying a charge that was never his. Forgiveness sees that nothing was ever taken, that the loss was imagined, and that the accused was innocent all along.

Brother: the other self the mind casts as the thief of its good, the mirror onto which its own sense of lack is thrown.

Live Genesis 27:35 today

  1. When your mind starts replaying what someone did to you, stop and ask what you are actually feeling underneath it. Usually it is smaller and more honest than the accusation, something like scared or left out.
  2. Pick the person you are quietly blaming for something and text them about something ordinary instead. Not a confrontation, just contact, so they stop being only a character in your story.
  3. In a meeting where you feel passed over, hold off on deciding who did it to you. Sit with the discomfort for one hour before you let it have a name and a face.

What am I feeling that would be harder to carry if I had no one to blame for it?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first pain is the event. The second is the story we build about who did it to us, and that second one is the arrow we fire into ourselves.

Stoicism · Epictetus

People do not disturb us. Our judgments about people disturb us. The man you call a thief is only a man plus your verdict on him.

Tao Te Ching

When you stop dividing the world into what was taken and what is owed, there is nothing left to defend and no one left to accuse.
