Genesis 28:2 · World English Bible
Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
The striving self is sent inward and upward to draw its union from a purer source than the surrounding flesh. Padanaram opens as the high field or plateau of the mind, the elevated country of thought where finer faculties dwell, and the instruction is to seek there the inner counterpart that lifts rather than the earthy ones near at hand.

ESOTERIC
The striving self is sent inward and upward to draw its union from a purer source than the surrounding flesh. Padanaram opens as the high field or plateau of the mind, the elevated country of thought where finer faculties dwell, and the instruction is to seek there the inner counterpart that lifts rather than the earthy ones near at hand. To take a wife from that house is for the developing part of a person to wed a refined power of the higher mind, one drawn from its own deep kindred rather than from the coarse ground. Growth means climbing to the elevated regions within and finding there the companion that raises the whole.
The part of a person that is rising must reach up into the higher mind for its partner, not down into the common appetites of the body.
Padanaram: the high field or plateau of the mind, the elevated country of thought where the finer faculties dwell Daughters of Laban: the refined inner powers belonging to the higher mind, drawn from a person's own deep kindred rather than the coarse ground

What am I joining myself to lately, and is it lifting me or just keeping me company?
Lift your mind upward and it becomes your closest friend, let it sink into appetite and it becomes your enemy. The same mind, two directions, and you pick the direction.
Keep no company beneath your own aim. Confucius tells the student to hold to friends he can learn from, because the level of the people around you becomes your own level.
Seek the companion who makes your soul bigger, not the one who makes your night easier. Rumi says the friend you choose decides who you turn into.
