Genesis 29:11 Meaning Jacob Kissed Rachel

Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

What does Genesis 29:11 mean?

When a mind that has traveled far in fear meets the one it has longed for, the tears are recognition, not sorrow. Something in it knows this face, and the weeping is what happens when the guard of the ego drops and love is allowed through without defense.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When a mind that has traveled far in fear meets the one it has longed for, the tears are recognition, not sorrow. Something in it knows this face, and the weeping is what happens when the guard of the ego drops and love is allowed through without defense.

The part of the mind that has learned to withhold finally stops withholding, and in that unguarded meeting it remembers that joining was always the thing it wanted. The tears are relief that the long separation was never as real as it felt.

Rachel: the beloved thought the mind has journeyed toward, the recognition of one's own that dissolves the sense of being alone

  1. If something moves you today, a song in the car, a memory, let it move you all the way instead of managing it back down.
  2. With one person you love, say the warm thing out loud instead of implying it. Nobody has ever regretted hearing it plainly.
  3. When your throat tightens somewhere you would rather not feel anything, at work or in a meeting, do not shame yourself for it. Something true just got through.

What have I been holding back that would be a relief to let through?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

Seeing yourself in another and the other in yourself is the end of loneliness, and it arrives as feeling before it arrives as understanding.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi writes that the reed cries out because it was cut from the reed bed, and that its weeping is the sound of longing for reunion. The tears belong to the meeting, not to grief.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Two who understand each other need no words, and forget each other's faces in the understanding. What dropped away was the effort of being separate.
