Genesis 3:17 · World English Bible

Genesis 3:17 Meaning To Adam He Said

To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and ate from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.

What does Genesis 3:17 mean?

Adam is the reasoning mind, and hearkening to the voice of the wife is the mind consenting to the pull of the emotional, receptive nature and turning its attention downward into matter. Eating of the forbidden tree is taking that lower knowledge into the self, and the ground that is cursed for his sake is the body, the earthy substance the mind must now labor in and draw its living from with effort and sorrow.

The descent into flesh makes the physical body a field that yields only through toil.

To eat of the ground in sorrow all the days of life is the whole condition of a consciousness that has sunk into the physical: it must feed itself from the very matter it fell into, and that feeding costs pain. This is the fallen state of a person, not a punishment sent from outside but the natural weight of spirit bound in body.

Adam: the reasoning mind of a person, the faculty that consents and falls Wife: the emotional, receptive nature whose voice draws the mind downward into matter Tree: the source of lower knowledge the mind takes into itself Ground: the physical body and earthy substance, cursed to yield its living only through toil

Live Genesis 3:17 today

  1. On your commute, let your phone stay in your pocket for the first ten minutes. Watch how quickly your mind reaches for something to feed on, and let the reaching go unanswered once.
  2. At dinner with family, when someone's mood pulls you toward irritation, pause before you follow it. You can feel the pull and still not go where it points.
  3. In a meeting that frustrates you, notch down the effort by one step instead of pushing harder. Some ground yields less the more you grind at it, and you can choose to stop grinding.

Where today am I working hardest for something that was never going to feed me?

The five colors blind the eye and the five flavors dull the mouth. The sage tends the center and does not chase the senses, so the senses do not consume him.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind untrained follows every pull and wanders where it is led. A guarded mind brings ease, and the body it lives in stops being a field of endless labor.

Sufism · Rumi

The body is a cage the soul agreed to enter, and the ache you feel is not punishment but the memory of open air.
