Genesis 3:3 Meaning But Not the Fruit of the Tree

but not the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it. You shall not touch it, lest you die.’

What does Genesis 3:3 mean?

A mind repeats what it was told and quietly adds to it, and in the adding the fear is already at work. Love spoke of one thing withheld, yet now the warning has grown to forbid even a touch, as though nearness itself could destroy.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind repeats what it was told and quietly adds to it, and in the adding the fear is already at work. Love spoke of one thing withheld, yet now the warning has grown to forbid even a touch, as though nearness itself could destroy. This is how guilt magnifies a limit into a threat: it hears care and translates it as danger, so that death seems to wait at the center of everything. The dread of dying is the ego's oldest lesson, the belief that a single choice could end what love created whole.

What stands in the midst is only a decision the mind is free to make. The mind has draped that decision in terror, but the terror is added, not given, and can be laid down.

Tree in the midst: the point of choice set at the very center of awareness, the decision between the two teachers. Fruit: what the mind takes in and makes its own when it chooses, the outcome it swallows as belief.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

At the center of you grows the mind that splits the world in two, into good and bad, wanted and unwanted. To eat its fruit is to judge, to label each thing and find it lacking, to stand apart from what is.

The moment you do this you leave the aliveness of the present and fall into thought. That is the death you were warned of. Not the ending of the body, but the dimming of your awareness, so that you no longer live life directly but only think about it.

Live Genesis 3:3 today

  1. When you catch yourself rehearsing a worst case in the shower or on the drive, say out loud what was actually said to you, not what you have grown it into.
  2. Before you pass a worry on to a friend or a group chat, trim it back to the facts. Watch how much of it was yours and not theirs.
  3. When an email lands and your stomach drops, read it twice before replying. The second read is usually smaller than the first.

What have I made bigger than it was told to me?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Most of the dread we carry is about things that never arrive.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first arrow is what actually happens. The second is the one we shoot into ourselves with our fear and commentary, and that one does the deeper damage.

Tao Te Ching

The sage does not add to what is. Adding weight to a thing does not make it more true, only heavier to carry.
