Genesis 30:3 · World English Bible

Genesis 30:3 Meaning She Said

She said, “Behold, my maid Bilhah. Go in to her, that she may bear on my knees, and I also may obtain children by her.”

What does Genesis 30:3 mean?

When a mind cannot get what it wants directly, the ego builds a substitute and works through a proxy, so another carries the burden while the self claims the reward. To have children by another's body upon one's own knees is the whole strategy of separation, arranging the world so fullness might arrive without changing the mind that feels empty.

When a mind cannot get what it wants directly, the ego builds a substitute and works through a proxy, so another carries the burden while the self claims the reward. To have children by another's body upon one's own knees is the whole strategy of separation, arranging the world so fullness might arrive without changing the mind that feels empty.

Such plans never fill the lack they were made to answer, because the lack was never outside. A mind turned to love would ask nothing of a servant, having no hole in itself to fill.

Maid: the part of the mind used as an instrument, made to carry what the self will not face in itself. Knees: the place where borrowed gain is claimed as one's own, a possession that was never really acquired.

The barren mind reaches for what it cannot yet birth on its own and works through a lower faculty to bring it forth. Rachel is the higher longing that stays empty for a season, and Bilhah, whose name carries the sense of timid faintness, is the dim servant-faculty pressed into service so that fruit can come by proxy. To bear upon the knees is to receive the child onto the seat of one's own generative power and claim it as native; what a person cannot produce from the crown descends first through the weaker channel and is then gathered up as one's own increase.

The strain shows how consciousness grows: the aspiration is real before the capacity is, so the untried lower nature carries the first offspring until the higher can conceive directly.

Rachel: the higher longing in a person that yearns for offspring of spirit while its own womb stays shut for a time Bilhah: the faint, timid lower faculty that bears fruit by proxy when the higher cannot yet conceive Knees: the seat of one's own generative power, onto which the new birth is received and claimed as native

  1. When you reach for the phone out of a vague emptiness rather than a reason, put it down and stay in the empty minute. It is shorter than you think.
  2. Before you ask someone to handle the awkward conversation for you, the complaint, the text, the apology, do it yourself. One small thing you were going to route through another person.
  3. Under deadline, when you want to hand the ugly part of the work to whoever will take it, keep that part. Give away the easy piece instead if you need help.

What have you been arranging around yourself, hoping it would fill something only you can face?
