Even the pursuing part of the mind is reached within the dream and quieted. That the warning comes by night, inside the sleep itself, shows that correction meets the ego where it lives, in the very illusion it defends. The command to speak neither good nor bad strips the taker of its power to judge, for both praise and blame are the ego's ways of holding another in its grip.

When the accusing voice is silenced, the mind it hunted is left untouched, and a pursuit that seemed dangerous becomes harmless because the one who chased can no longer pronounce a verdict over anyone.

Laban the Syrian: the ego as pursuer, the part of the mind that gives chase to reclaim what it thinks it owns. A dream by night: the illusion of separation itself, the sleep within which every threat and its correction take place. Jacob: the part of the mind moving toward its true home, the traveler fear tries to overtake.

The higher mind is warned, in the dark of inward sleep, to leave the rising spirit alone, neither praising it as good nor condemning it as bad. This is the whole discipline of stillness: the judging faculty must fall silent so the spirit can move without being pulled to one side or the other. Good is only the word god with an o inserted, and the moment a person weighs an inner motion as good or bad the 2 are already split, and the split itself is the disturbance.

When the higher mind stops speaking either verdict, spirit is free to grow untroubled, and the night of meditation does its work in a person who has ceased to grade every thought that surfaces.

Jacob: the spirit rising within a person as it separates from lower conditioning Laban: the higher, luminous mind that oversees and would judge that rising spirit Dream by night: the inward dark of meditation where the deeper instruction is received
