Genesis 31:8 · World English Bible

Genesis 31:8 Meaning If He Said

If he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ then all the flock bore speckled. If he said, ‘The streaked will be your wages,’ then all the flock bore streaked.

What does Genesis 31:8 mean?

Whatever the higher mind names as the wage, the mind's own thoughts arrange themselves to match it. The cattle are thoughts and ideas, and their bearing speckled or ringstraked on command shows how the contents of consciousness shape themselves to the word spoken over them.

Whatever the higher mind names as the wage, the mind's own thoughts arrange themselves to match it. The cattle are thoughts and ideas, and their bearing speckled or ringstraked on command shows how the contents of consciousness shape themselves to the word spoken over them. Say one pattern and the thoughts come out that pattern; say another and they turn again. The inner herd follows the naming.

The point beneath the bargaining is that thought obeys the word set over it. What the higher awareness declares, the mind reproduces in its own images, so the character of a person's thinking is decided by what governs it from above.

The cattle: the thoughts and ideas of a person, the inner herd that takes whatever pattern is named over it Speckled and ringstraked: the marks thoughts take on, the shapes consciousness produces to match the word spoken above them

Live Genesis 31:8 today

  1. Hear the sentence you have been saying about yourself this week, and say a truer one instead. Not a brighter one, a truer one. Then see what your mind does with it the next hour.
  2. In your next conversation, name one good thing you actually see in the other person. People grow toward the word spoken over them, and so do you.
  3. Before a hard call or meeting, decide the one word you want to govern you in there, steady, honest, kind. Say it once, then let your thinking arrange itself around it.

What word have you let rule your thinking, and would you choose it again today?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada 1

We become what we think. The mind takes the shape of whatever it keeps repeating, and the life follows the shape.

Hinduism · Upanishads

A person is made of the thing they have set their heart on. Whatever you fix on, that is what you are becoming.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Your life takes the color of your thoughts, so guard what you say over yourself, because the mind obeys the word you keep giving it.
