Genesis 32:22 Meaning He Rose Up That Night

He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.

What does Genesis 32:22 mean?

This is the crossing a person makes at the threshold of transformation, moving everything he has gathered from one side of himself to the other. The night is the dark passage of the unconscious, the hour when the old self must be carried over before the new name is given.

Esoteric

This is the crossing a person makes at the threshold of transformation, moving everything he has gathered from one side of himself to the other. The night is the dark passage of the unconscious, the hour when the old self must be carried over before the new name is given. Jacob is the striving self on its way to becoming Israel, and he does not cross empty: the wives and handmaids are the affections and the working powers of the soul, the 11 sons the faculties born from them, all of them ferried across the deep. The ford is the narrow place where the soul passes from the lower life to the higher, and everything a person is must go through that single crossing.

Night: the dark passage of the unconscious, the hour the old self is carried across before dawn. Jabbok: the narrow ford between the lower and higher life, the one shallow crossing the soul must pass. 11: the faculties of the soul not yet made complete, one short of the full 12, still awaiting the wrestling that finishes them.

  3. Walking into the hard room, stop in the doorway for one breath and let yourself arrive as you actually are, not the cleaned-up version.

Crossing to the far shore is the whole image of the path, and no part of you is left behind on the near bank. Everything you are goes over, including what you would rather not carry.
