Genesis 32:24 · World English Bible
Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
Left finally alone, a mind meets the one adversary it has never faced, and the struggle is with no stranger. The man in the dark is the self, the whole of what fear built, and the wrestling is the long contest between the wish to keep the old identity and the readiness to let it go.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Left finally alone, a mind meets the one adversary it has never faced, and the struggle is with no stranger. The man in the dark is the self, the whole of what fear built, and the wrestling is the long contest between the wish to keep the old identity and the readiness to let it go. It lasts until dawn because the ego does not yield easily. Yet this is the only combat that leads anywhere, for it is fought against illusion and not against a brother.
What such a mind grapples with in the dark is its own resistance to being changed. The fight ends only when light comes, and light is simply the willingness to see what it has been holding onto.
Man: the self the mind wrestles in solitude, the whole identity fear has built and is unwilling to release Breaking of the day: the coming of light to the mind, the dawning recognition that ends the struggle with itself

MANIFESTATION
Jacob is the supplanter, the one who takes hold of a new self by pushing the old self out of place, and here he is left utterly alone, which is the only condition in which this work is done. No one else can persuade you into a changed identity. The man he wrestles is not a stranger from outside. It is the assumption he is trying to make his own, the feeling of being the person he wants to be, which resists him as long as he still feels like his old self.
The struggle lasts until the breaking of the day, meaning it holds through the dark until the new state finally feels true and dawns in him as fact. This is the whole labor: to seize an idea of yourself that the senses deny, and refuse to let go until it stops feeling borrowed. The man who wins that grip stops being Jacob the grasper and becomes Israel, one who has prevailed by seeing himself made new.

ESOTERIC
To be left alone is to arrive at the one place where the struggle can happen: inside, with no crowd and no father's house to hide behind. The supplanter, the part of a person that has lived by cunning and grasping the heel of the outer life, meets the higher man of his own nature in the dark, and the 2 grip each other where no one can see. The wrestling holds through the night, the long span of unknowing, and does not release until day breaks in the mind. The dawn is not the sun outside. It is the light of understanding rising in a person after the whole self has been forced to face itself.
Jacob: the lower self that has lived by cunning and grasping, the part of a person built on the outer struggle The man who wrestles: the higher nature within, met alone in the dark of a person's own being The breaking of the day: the light of understanding that rises in the mind after the inner contest is endured

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Being truly alone is when the inner figures come out. As long as a person stays busy with other people, he can keep them out of sight. But solitude opens the door, and up rises the stranger he has been avoiding, the one who carries everything he would rather not own.
The fight lasts all night because it is a fight with a part of himself. Nothing is settled until the two have met and neither has run away. A man who grips this figure and refuses to let go is changed by morning, because he has taken back a piece of his own strength that he had thrown into the dark.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The decisive struggle comes when everyone else has been sent ahead and a man stands alone with what he has been dodging. Jacob strips away his wives, his children, his flocks, his whole camp, and only then does the adversary step out of the dark. The enemy is within. He grapples with what he has refused to face in himself, the weight of what he did to his brother and his father, met at last hand to hand.
The wrestling runs the whole night because such things do not settle quickly. No one resolves his deepest conflict in an afternoon of good intentions. He struggles in the dark, unsure who he is even fighting, until something gives way toward dawn. A man goes through the long night alone before the day will break for him.
Christian Psychology lens
What part of who I think I am am I fighting hardest to keep?
To know others is wisdom. To know yourself is harder, and to master yourself is the only victory that holds.
It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. That victory nobody can take from you.
The mountain you have to climb is the one you are standing on. There is no other opponent in the room.
