CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Here the mind cloaks its planned attack in the language of a wrong endured, using guilt as the warrant for deceit. This is how the ego works: it points to an injury, declares itself justified, and hides its own aggression behind the offense of another. The grievance becomes a cover story, and the mind persuades itself that its darkness is only fairness.

But an attack dressed as justice is still the choice for fear, and it keeps the guilt it claims to be answering. Only forgiveness breaks the cycle, by seeing the first wrong as a figure in a dream and refusing to make it the ground of a second.

The sons: the mind's scheming defenders, the thoughts that borrow a grievance to justify the harm they already intend. Dinah, their sister: the injured innocence held up as the reason, made into a pretext by a mind that wants its vengeance to look righteous.

Meditation separates a person from the restless mind by deliberately deceiving and shutting thought down. The sons of Jacob are the thoughts begotten of anointed inner stillness, and their answering deceitfully is not treachery but the deliberate withdrawal of the meditative mind, the setting of a trap that quiets the outer, grasping thoughts by seeming to agree with them. The spirit acts against the violation of its own inner feeling by turning the lower mind's demand back on itself.

Dinah, the sacred inner feeling, has been defiled by the outward nurturing thought, and the response of the higher thoughts is to disarm that thought through the very stillness that appears to consent. This is how a person shuts down the aggression of the restless mind, meeting it with a quiet that undoes it.

Jacob: the spirit within a person Sons of Jacob: the thoughts begotten of anointed meditation Dinah: the sacred inner feeling, the virgin self of the emotions Shechem: the shoulder, the physical thought that defiled the inner feeling

Live Genesis 34:13 today

  1. Before sending the message you have been drafting in your head all afternoon, ask yourself plainly what you want it to do to the other person. If the honest answer is to make them feel small, delete it.
  2. If you are late replying or you dropped the ball, say that first, without opening with what they did wrong. One clean apology, no attached invoice.
  3. When a group chat starts building the case against someone, try not to add the detail you have been saving. Say nothing, or say the one fair thing you know.

When I am sure I am in the right, what am I quietly planning to do with that?

Tao Te Ching 38

When genuine goodness is lost, people invent rules and reasons, and the reasons become a thin cover over what they already wanted to do. The honest heart does not need a justification.

It is easy to see the faults of others and hard to see your own; we winnow another's failings like chaff in the wind and hide our own like a cheat hides a bad throw.

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not events that disturb us but our opinions about them, and the opinion we most protect is the one that makes us the wronged party. Blame is the last thing an untrained mind gives up.
