Genesis 34:15 Meaning Only on This Condition Will We Consent

Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised,

What does Genesis 34:15 mean?

Meditation cuts away desire from the thoughts in order to quiet the whole mind. The condition set here, that every male be circumcised, is the demand that the mind itself have its cravings pared off before it can be joined to the inner life.

Meditation cuts away desire from the thoughts in order to quiet the whole mind. The condition set here, that every male be circumcised, is the demand that the mind itself have its cravings pared off before it can be joined to the inner life. The male is the mind, and circumcision is the cutting away of desire from thought, the paring back of appetite so that what remains can be still.

The consent is granted only on these terms because the outward, grasping mind cannot be united with the sacred inner feeling until its desires are severed. What sounds like a bargain is the inner law that no thought enters the higher ground still carrying its cravings; the appetite must be cut away first, and only the quieted mind is let through.

Male: the mind, the thinking faculty in a person Circumcised: the desires cut away from the thoughts so the mind can be stilled

Live Genesis 34:15 today

  1. Before you open your phone this morning, sit with it face down for one minute and let the want to check it rise and pass without acting on it. You are not fighting the urge, just letting it go soft.
  2. In your next conversation, drop the thing you were hoping to get out of it. No steering toward your point, no waiting for your turn. See what the person actually says when you are not reaching for anything.
  3. When a work message lands and your chest tightens, write the reply you want to send, then delete it and write the one with nothing grasping in it. Send the second one.

What would this hour feel like if I were not trying to get anything from it?

The same truth in other traditions

Patanjali, Yoga Sutras

The whole aim is stated at the start: still the turning of the mind. Desire is what keeps it turning, so the craving is loosened first and the stillness follows.

Buddhism · Second Noble Truth

The Buddha traced suffering to thirst, the grasping inside a thought. Cut the thirst and the thought can rest instead of chasing.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught his students to practice wanting less before trying to think clearly, because a mind full of appetite cannot see straight.
