Genesis 35:29 · World English Bible

Genesis 35:29 Meaning Isaac Gave Up the Spirit and Died

Isaac gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.

What does Genesis 35:29 mean?

Death here is the release of the etheric life energy, the non-physical self that has worn out its long service in the body and now lets go. Isaac is the spiritual side of a person, the flesh laid down and offered up when its work is finished; when that offering completes, the 2 natures born of it perform the burial together.

Death here is the release of the etheric life energy, the non-physical self that has worn out its long service in the body and now lets go. Isaac is the spiritual side of a person, the flesh laid down and offered up when its work is finished; when that offering completes, the 2 natures born of it perform the burial together.

Esau is the rough, carnal outer body, all appetite and surface. Jacob is the smoother inner nature that reaches past the outer man toward the higher claim. Both stand over the grave because in a person the coarse and the refined together lower the old self into rest, and neither is discarded when the animating energy withdraws.

Isaac: the spiritual side of self, the flesh that is sacrificed when its purpose is done Esau: the rough, carnal outer body ruled by appetite and the senses Jacob: the smoother inner nature that reaches for the higher birthright

Live Genesis 35:29 today

  1. Thank your body for something boring it did today, carrying the groceries, climbing the stairs, digesting dinner. It is not the lesser part of you, it is the part that showed up.
  2. With someone whose roughness you usually wince at, let it stand today. The blunt friend, the loud relative at dinner. Both halves of a person come to the table.
  3. When you catch yourself at war with your own hunger or tiredness in the middle of a hard afternoon, feed it or rest it instead of overriding it. Then go back to the work.

Which part of myself have I been trying to leave behind instead of bringing along?

Tao Te Ching

The Tao names every pair together, hard with soft, high with low, so neither has meaning without the other. Both belong to the one turning.

Zen

The teaching is that this very body is the vehicle, appetite and all. Nothing is thrown away on the way to waking up.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Krishna tells Arjuna the one who wears the body is not the body. When the garment is set down, what wore it was never the thing dying.
