Genesis 35:7 · World English Bible

Genesis 35:7 Meaning He Built an Altar There

He built an altar there, and called the place El Beth El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

What does Genesis 35:7 mean?

A man returns to name the spot where he once ran in fear, and the temptation is to remember only his own escape, crediting his cleverness for surviving. Building an altar instead of a monument is the cure, marking not what he did but where he was met.

The place of his worst dread became the place God showed Himself, the same ground read two ways. So the flight and the meeting were never separate scenes; the corner where he felt most alone was a mirror the hidden God had waited in, seen only when he looked back.

Live Genesis 35:7 today

  1. Think of the worst week you had in the last few years and ask what you were given there, not just what it cost you. Write one line of it in your notes app so you have it.
  2. Tell someone the honest version of a time you were scared, including the part where help arrived. Most people only ever hear the edited version from us.
  3. When today goes sideways in traffic or on a call, say quietly to yourself that this is not a place you are alone. Then drive, or talk, as if that were true.

Where did something meet you at the moment you were most sure you were on your own?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What blocks the road becomes the road. The obstacle you fled is often the exact place something was handed to you.

Tao Te Ching

Misfortune and good fortune lean on each other, and nobody can tell from inside which one is arriving. The same ground gets read two different ways depending on when you look.

Zen

The place where you fell down is the place to stand up. Not another place, a better one, that one.
