Genesis 36:7 · World English Bible

Genesis 36:7 Meaning For Their Substance Was Too Great

For their substance was too great for them to dwell together, and the land of their travels couldn’t bear them because of their livestock.

What does Genesis 36:7 mean?

Two brothers part because their possessions have grown too great for one shared ground to hold, and in this the ego's arithmetic shows plainly: accumulation divides. What the mind gathers to feel secure becomes the very reason it cannot stay joined, for every added holding marks a boundary, a line of mine against yours.

The land could hold the brothers but not their herds, which is to say awareness has endless room for minds that meet as one and none at all for the possessions that set them at odds. Fullness of things crowds out fellowship. Only a mind that seeks little outside itself finds it has space enough to remain with its brother in peace.

Riches and cattle: the accumulations the mind piles up for safety, the holdings whose very increase draws borders and forces the self apart from its brother. Land: the shared awareness meant to hold minds together, spacious for those who join as one yet unable to contain the possessions that divide them.

  1. Look at one thing you are saving, money, space, time, and give a little of it away today where it is actually needed. Small is fine.
  2. In a conversation about money or stuff with someone close, drop the comparison before it starts. No quiet tally of who has what.
  3. When something at work is about territory, whose project, whose credit, whose call, hand over the piece you were going to fight for. See if the room gets bigger.

What costs more, your name or your life, your things or your wellbeing? The one who hoards most loses most, and knowing when to stop keeps you from ruin.

The root of suffering is grasping, and the more we gather the more edges we have to defend. Generosity loosens the grip on both sides at once.

It is not the one who has too little who is poor but the one who craves more. No fortune is big enough for a mind that keeps counting.
