Genesis 37:18 · World English Bible
They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
The attack is decided before the brother has spoken a word. This is how judgment always works: the mind condemns from a distance, meeting not the person but the image it has already painted of him.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The attack is decided before the brother has spoken a word. This is how judgment always works: the mind condemns from a distance, meeting not the person but the image it has already painted of him. What is hated was hated before he arrived, because the guilt is not in him at all. It is the mind's own, thrown outward onto a figure far off, so that the accuser need never look within.
Seeing him afar is the whole trick of separation, the careful gap the ego keeps so that a brother stays a stranger and can be feared. Come near, and the plot dissolves, for closeness reveals there was never an enemy, only a mind afraid of its own shadow.
Brethren: the parts of the mind that pass sentence on what they have kept at a distance Joseph afar off: the brother seen as a distant image the mind has already judged, never as he is

Who have I convicted from far away, without ever getting close?
The master tells the student: stop painting the person before you meet them, and look. The face you were arguing with was your own picture.
Most of what offends you is the opinion you added on top of the event. Remove the commentary, and the person is simply a person doing something.
The wall you built against your brother is the thing keeping you in the dark. Step close and the enemy turns out to be made of your own fear.
