Genesis 37:24 Meaning And They Took Him

and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.

What does Genesis 37:24 mean?

The pit is the low, dark hollow of the body, the sunken place of the lower nature into which the bright inner faculty is thrown when the coarser powers of a person turn against it. Joseph, the dreamer, is the visionary self, the higher imaginative light cast down out of sight into the depths.

The pit is the low, dark hollow of the body, the sunken place of the lower nature into which the bright inner faculty is thrown when the coarser powers of a person turn against it. Joseph, the dreamer, is the visionary self, the higher imaginative light cast down out of sight into the depths. That the pit holds no water is the key: water is the living spirit, the flowing current of the soul, and its absence marks a state emptied of that flow, a dry captivity where awareness is buried without nourishment. This is the descent of the higher self into matter, sealed for a time in a body that has run dry.

What happens is the burying of a person's finest inner faculty in the dry lower depths, cut off for a season from the living current.

Live Genesis 37:24 today

  1. If today feels flat and dry, the kind of day where nothing in you wants to make anything, try not to fix it with your phone. Sit with the dullness for ten minutes, no screen, and let it be a low place you are passing through rather than proof of who you are.
  2. Someone close to you is probably in their own dry stretch, quiet in the group chat, short over text, not really there at family dinner. Go toward them instead of away, and ask what it has been like lately without rushing to cheer them up.
  3. When a meeting or a comment makes you want to shrink the brightest part of yourself, the idea, the hope, the thing you actually care about, keep it alive privately. Write it down in your notes app before the day buries it, so it survives the room.

What good thing in me have I let go dry, and what would it take to give it water again?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 40

The Tao moves by returning, and what rises must first sink. The dry, empty low place is not the end of the current but the turn where it gathers again.

Zen, Hakuin on the great doubt

Hakuin taught that practice passes through a block where everything goes dead and nothing moves, and that this stuck darkness is the very ground the breakthrough comes from. The one who sits in it without fleeing is already near the turn.

Sufism, Rumi

Rumi returns often to Joseph in the well, saying the dream was carried down with him and never lost there. The bucket and rope come to the one who waits at the bottom.
