Genesis 37:3 Meaning Now Israel Loved Joseph More Than All

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors.

What does Genesis 37:3 mean?

The ripened self favors the faculty born late in a person, the child of maturity that arrives only after the earlier powers are already grown. Joseph is the higher imagination, the part that dreams and sees ahead, and the coat of many colours is the full spectrum of light gathered in one being, every ray of the inner rainbow worn as a single garment.

This whole self prizes that faculty above the rest because through it the many-hued light of consciousness is clothed and made visible. The favored son is the awakened vision within, and the many colours are the complete range of a person's inner light drawn together in one form.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The coat of many colours marks the gifted, multifaceted child, the one in whom many latent capacities shine at once, and it is both a promise and a loaded weapon. A father's open favoritism, draped visibly over one son's shoulders, does not bless that boy so much as paint a target on him. What the coat sets in motion is the ruinous rivalry of brothers, and the story will run through betrayal and a pit before any of it comes right.

A hard lesson hides inside this beauty. A capacity shown off before it is earned invites the resentment of everyone around it, and the favored child pays for a love he did not ask for. To carry such gifts safely, a person has to go out into many places and situations that call those capacities into disciplined use. Talent unrefined and flaunted becomes the seed of the family's undoing.

Live Genesis 37:3 today

  1. Give ten minutes today to the part of you that imagines, no output required. Draw, hum, picture the room you want to live in, let it be useless.
  2. Ask someone what they have been daydreaming about lately, and take it seriously when they tell you. Do not ask how they will do it or what it is for.
  3. When you are stuck on something at work, stop solving it and picture it finished instead, in detail, including what it feels like. Then go back in.

What have I been calling a daydream that might be the most awake part of me?

The same truth in other traditions

Sufism · Ibn Arabi

Imagination is treated as a real faculty of perception, not decoration. It is the place where the unseen takes on form so a person can meet it.

Hinduism · the many and the one

The tradition speaks of one light refracted into countless forms, a single source wearing every color. The variety is not scattering, it is the one thing showing itself.

Zen · Shunryu Suzuki

He taught beginner's mind, the open seeing that has not yet hardened into expertise. The fresh look is prized over the practiced one.
