Genesis 37:5 Meaning Joseph Dreamed a Dream

Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

What does Genesis 37:5 mean?

A dream rises from the part of the mind we do not control, and it often carries a truth the daytime self would rather not see. When the young man told his brothers what he had dreamed, he was really reporting what that deeper mind had shown him: that he stood apart.

Psychoanalysis

A dream rises from the part of the mind we do not control, and it often carries a truth the daytime self would rather not see. When the young man told his brothers what he had dreamed, he was really reporting what that deeper mind had shown him: that he stood apart.

Their hatred grew because the dream touched an envy they had been carrying without admitting it. A dream spoken aloud does not invent such feelings. It names what was already hidden inside them, and once named, the envy burned hotter than before.

  1. If a dream stays with you after you wake, write down three lines of it on your phone before you check anything else, and ask what part of your life it is describing.
  2. When somebody's good news lands badly in you, sit with that sting for a second before you reply in the group chat. The feeling was already there. Their news only turned the light on.
  3. In a meeting where a coworker gets praised and you feel yourself going cold, stay honest with yourself about it instead of looking for a flaw in their work.

What feeling in me gets loud when someone else does well, and how long have I been carrying it?

Zen

A mirror does not create the face it shows. It only returns what stands in front of it, and people blame the mirror for what they cannot stand to see.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What wounds us is not the thing said but the judgment we already hold about ourselves. The words only press on a bruise that was there first.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly and woke unsure which was the dreamer. Sleep shows us a self the waking mind has not accounted for.
