Genesis 39:12 Meaning She Caught Him by His Garment

She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

What does Genesis 39:12 mean?

The higher faculty escapes the grip of appetite by letting the outer covering go. The garment is the outward personality, the surface identity a person wears, and appetite can only seize what is on the surface, never the living center.

The higher faculty escapes the grip of appetite by letting the outer covering go. The garment is the outward personality, the surface identity a person wears, and appetite can only seize what is on the surface, never the living center. Joseph slips free precisely because he does not identify with the cloth in the woman's hand; he surrenders the mask and keeps the man. To flee is the turning of attention away from the demand of the senses, the withdrawal of the inner self from the thing that clutches at it.

The self a person truly is cannot be held by craving, because craving can only close its fingers on the covering, never on the one who wears it.

The garment: the outer personality and surface identity, the covering appetite can seize while the true self slips free The hand: the grip of craving, closing on what is on the surface and unable to hold the living center Joseph: the inner self able to leave the mask behind and remain untaken

  1. When a comment online or at work goes after your image, let it have the image. Walk away from the thread. It is holding a coat, not you.
  2. If a conversation is turning into a fight you cannot win, leave it mid-sentence if you must. Leaving awkwardly is cheaper than staying and losing yourself in it.
  3. Next time you feel trapped by what people expect you to be, remember that the role is removable. Let them hold the version of you they are gripping and go on being the real one.

What are you still wearing only because somebody has hold of it?

All anyone can grab is the finger. The moon is untouched by the hand that reaches.

The body is a garment the self changes the way a person changes worn clothes. What you are is never the cloth.

Epictetus said that if someone takes your body, your reputation, your position, they have taken only what was never fully yours. Your own judgments stay with you.
