Genesis 39:7 Meaning After These Things

After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”

What does Genesis 39:7 mean?

The pull of the lower nature fixes its gaze on the rising faculty and calls it down into mere sensation. The master's wife is the appetite of the body, the desire-self that wants to bind the awakening power to the ground of flesh and keep it there.

The pull of the lower nature fixes its gaze on the rising faculty and calls it down into mere sensation. The master's wife is the appetite of the body, the desire-self that wants to bind the awakening power to the ground of flesh and keep it there. Her single command is the whole seduction of the senses, always the same request under a thousand faces: come down, dissolve into me, forget the higher work. The eyes cast upon Joseph are appetite selecting its object, the moment craving stops wandering and locks onto the very part of a person meant to rise.

What happens here is the standing conflict inside everyone, the settled higher aim tempted by the immediate hunger that would swallow it.

Joseph: the ascending faculty, the increasing power in a person that appetite most wants to drag down The master's wife: the desire-self of the body, the craving nature that seeks to bind awakening to the flesh The eyes: the aim of appetite, craving fixing itself upon an object and ceasing to wander

Live Genesis 39:7 today

  1. When the urge arrives today, the phone, the snack, the message you should not send, name it out loud as a want rather than a plan. Wanting something and doing it are two different events with a gap in between.
  2. If someone is pulling you toward a version of yourself that is smaller than the one you are becoming, you can be warm and still say no. The warmth is not the problem.
  3. Under stress, the pull will go straight for whatever you are trying to build. Expect that. It is not a sign the thing is wrong, it is a sign the thing is alive.

What does the want in you go after first, and why that exactly?

Buddhism · Mara under the Bodhi tree

As the Buddha neared waking, temptation came with its best offers, and came hardest at exactly that moment. Craving aims for whatever is rising in you.

Tao Te Ching 46

There is no greater misfortune than not knowing when you have enough. Wanting fixes on an object and calls it necessary.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said that when an impression arrives, do not get carried off by it. Wait. Look at it. It is a visitor, not a command.
