Genesis 40:23 Meaning Yet the Chief Cup Bearer Didn’t Remember

Yet the chief cup bearer didn’t remember Joseph, but forgot him.

What does Genesis 40:23 mean?

When help has come and the mind is restored to its place, the ego moves quickly to forget the one who healed it. Forgetting the healer is how separation keeps itself intact, for a mind that remembers where its peace came from would have to keep choosing love, and the ego cannot allow that.

Christian Psychology

When help has come and the mind is restored to its place, the ego moves quickly to forget the one who healed it. Forgetting the healer is how separation keeps itself intact, for a mind that remembers where its peace came from would have to keep choosing love, and the ego cannot allow that. So the deliverer is set aside and the prison of the old thought is entered again.

What looks like ingratitude is really the fear of remembering. The part of the mind that was freed does not hate its rescuer; it simply lets him slip away because holding him near would end the belief that it stands alone. To remember the one who saves is to be saved, and the mind that forgets on purpose is choosing to keep its chains a little longer.

Chief butler: the part of the mind that has been forgiven and restored yet still serves the old order Joseph: the awakened teacher within, the memory of love that the fearful mind lets slip away

Live Genesis 40:23 today

  1. Think of one person who helped you when things were bad and you never circled back. Send the message today, short and late is fine.
  2. At dinner or on a call, say out loud what somebody did for you recently, in front of them. Gratitude kept private tends to evaporate.
  3. When a stressful stretch finally eases and you are ready to move on fast, pause long enough to remember what carried you through it. Rushing past the relief is how we lose the lesson.

Who helped me when I needed it, and have I let them quietly slip out of my mind?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

Krishna says the one who remembers him at all times is never lost. Forgetting is the whole fall, and remembrance is the whole return.

Sufism · dhikr

The Sufi practice is simply remembrance, repeated daily, because the heart forgets fast. Not learning something new, just refusing to let the good thing slip away.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca said ingratitude comes from how quickly good fortune feels ordinary. Relief forgets its source almost the moment it arrives.
