Genesis 42:36 · World English Bible

Genesis 42:36 Meaning Jacob

Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.”

What does Genesis 42:36 mean?

A mind convinced it is under siege reads every loss as aimed at itself and counts its griefs as an army arrayed against it. Jacob names his missing sons and concludes that all these things are against me, the ego's oldest sentence, the belief that the world conspires to wound the self.

A mind convinced it is under siege reads every loss as aimed at itself and counts its griefs as an army arrayed against it. Jacob names his missing sons and concludes that all these things are against me, the ego's oldest sentence, the belief that the world conspires to wound the self. Yet Joseph is not lost at all, only unseen, and the whole lament is built on a separation that fear insists is real.

What feels like everything turning against him is only his own fear projected outward as circumstance. The sons he mourns are nearer than he knows, and the dread would lift the moment he questioned it.

Joseph: the innocence believed dead, in truth alive and waiting to be recognized. Simeon: the part of the self felt as captive and gone, still held and not lost. Benjamin: the last thing the fearful mind clings to, guarded against a threat it imagines rather than sees.

Self-Help

A person's verdict on their own life arrives long before the evidence is in, and then they live inside the verdict.

Add up losses and call the sum a conclusion, and the mind will hold that conclusion with the full force it could have given to a promise. That grip sets the state, the state produces a father who clutches, and the clutching stalls the very journey that ends with a son alive in Egypt and grain in the house.

The arithmetic was right about the facts and completely wrong about their direction. Conviction about an unseen outcome was already operating at full strength here; it was simply aimed at a story God was not writing. A man in that state loses the months he could have spent moving, and he grieves a bereavement that never happened.

Live Genesis 42:36 today

  1. When you catch yourself tallying everything that has gone wrong lately, stop adding to the list and ask whether each item is really aimed at you.
  2. Tell someone close to you about a fear you are carrying before it hardens into a verdict about your whole life. Saying it out loud takes some air out of it.
  3. When a delay or a bad email makes you think of course, it is always me, try a flatter version: this happened, and it is not a message about who I am.

Which of the things I call proof that life is against me have I never actually checked?

Most of our suffering happens in opinion. The mind arranges its fears into an army and then reports back that it is surrounded.

The second arrow is the one we fire ourselves. The loss is one thing, and the story that the world is against us is the wound we add.

What looks like misfortune and what looks like blessing keep trading places. The person who is certain which is which has stopped looking.
