Genesis 43:34 Meaning He Sent Portions to Them From Before

He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

What does Genesis 43:34 mean?

Benjamin is the youngest-born power in a person, the last faculty to appear and the nearest to the awakened center, and his fivefold portion marks the greater measure of life poured into what stands closest to the source. The number 5 is the number of the senses gathered and lifted, the human portion raised toward spirit.

Benjamin is the youngest-born power in a person, the last faculty to appear and the nearest to the awakened center, and his fivefold portion marks the greater measure of life poured into what stands closest to the source. The number 5 is the number of the senses gathered and lifted, the human portion raised toward spirit. The brothers are the older faculties, each fed from the same table, but the newest and highest receives the fuller share.

The shared meal and gladness is the nourishing of the inner powers from one center, all drawing from the same provision. What is youngest and most spiritual in a person is given the largest supply, so the highest faculty is strengthened above the rest.

Live Genesis 43:34 today

  1. Give the best hour of your day, not the leftover one, to the thing in you that is actually growing. Protect it the way you would protect a meeting with your boss.
  2. At a meal with people today, put your phone somewhere else and eat slowly enough to taste it. Let the table be the whole event.
  3. When your attention is being pulled in five directions, pick the one thing that matters most and give it a real share. The rest can have what is left.

What in me am I feeding, and what am I letting starve?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

The senses gathered and pointed one way carry a person further than all of them scattered. Feed what is highest in you and the rest follows.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What you give your attention to grows. Spend the best of your day on the best thing in you, not on whatever shouted loudest.

Buddhism

What you feed is what gets strong. The wholesome in you is small at first, so give it the larger share.
