CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

An accusation sent after a mind that thinks itself already free is the ego's most familiar move. Just as it believes the distance is safe, the old charge of ingratitude comes riding up behind, insisting that good was answered with evil. The question sounds like justice, yet its whole purpose is to draw the guilty back and hold them a little longer inside the story of their wrong.

Here the pursuit is staged by love for a deeper end, but the mind knows this voice well. It is the one that will not let a grievance rest, that overtakes peace with the reminder of a debt, so the traveler stops and turns and takes up guilt again instead of walking on.

Steward: the messenger of accusation the mind sends to overtake its own peace and call it back into guilt City: the settled place of safety the mind believes it has reached, only to find the charge riding after it

  1. When the old regret comes riding up at eleven at night, name it as a visitor rather than a verdict. You can let it stand there without opening the door and going back over everything.
  2. If someone brings up a thing you already made right, you can say "I handled that, and I am not going back into it." Kind voice, short sentence, no second trial.
  3. When a message lands that is designed to make you feel ungrateful or in debt, wait before you reply. Ask whether answering it moves anything forward or just pulls you back into the story.

What old charge keeps catching up with me that I have already answered?

The same truth in other traditions

Marcus Aurelius · Meditations

You have power over your own mind, not over the voices that come after you. Decline the invitation to be dragged back and keep walking.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first arrow is the thing that happened. The second is the one we shoot into ourselves afterward, again and again, and only that one is optional.

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not quarrel cannot be drawn into the quarrel. There is nothing for the charge to catch on.
