Christian Psychology

The passing of one form of the self is no cause for dread, for the presence that mattered was never the form. A mind releases the identity it thought it was and trusts that what remains is enough to carry it home. Death here is only the laying down of a body and a season; the guiding presence stays and leads the mind back to the ground of its origin.

Fear makes an ending look like abandonment, but the accompaniment does not depend on any single shape the mind wore. A mind returning to its source discovers the way back was always kept open for it.

Israel: the passing form of the self, the identity ready to be laid down without fear Joseph: the part of the mind that continues, the beloved self accompanied onward after the old form is released The land of your fathers: the origin the mind returns to, the home of trust from which it first came and to which it is led back

Live Genesis 48:21 today

  1. Something about your life is ending, the job title, the apartment, the stage your body was in. Say out loud that the form is going and you are not, then make the next normal cup of coffee.
  2. Sit with someone older than you and let them talk about the end without steering them back to brighter subjects. Your steadiness tells them more than reassurance does.
  3. When a change at work or at home gets announced and your chest tightens, name what you are actually afraid of losing. Usually it is a shape, not a self, and saying so takes the panic out of the week.

What am I holding as my identity that is really just a shape I am wearing for now?

Tao Te Ching

All things rise, run their course, and return to the root. The returning is not a loss but the quiet the whole movement was headed for.

Buddhism

Every form you have worn is on its way out, and clinging to one of them is what makes its leaving feel like ruin. What is unshaken was never one of the forms.

Stoicism · Seneca

We are always handing back what was lent to us, and the loan was never the point. Nothing essential is lost when a borrowed shape is returned.
