Genesis 49:14 · World English Bible
Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the saddlebags.
Issachar names the laboring power in a person, the strong animal nature that bears weight without complaint and lies down willingly under load. The ass is no mockery here but the patient bodily force that carries the spirit through the world, strong enough to bear much, content to kneel where it is set.

ESOTERIC
Issachar names the laboring power in a person, the strong animal nature that bears weight without complaint and lies down willingly under load. The ass is no mockery here but the patient bodily force that carries the spirit through the world, strong enough to bear much, content to kneel where it is set. To couch down between 2 burdens is to rest fixed between the pull of matter and the pull of spirit, taking up the weight of both.
This is the condition of every embodied life: a capable creature settled between 2 demands, choosing the ground between them. The strength is real, yet it stays low and bent, carrying rather than rising, until the one who rides it decides where it goes.
Issachar: the laboring, burden-bearing power in a person, strong and patient under load Ass: the bodily animal nature that carries the spirit through the world, willing to kneel 2 burdens: the double pull of matter and spirit, the 2 weights the embodied life settles between

What have I been carrying patiently for so long that I forgot I am the one who chooses where it goes?
The body is a vehicle to be neither pampered nor punished, and the steady person keeps it fed, rested and useful so it can carry them the whole way.
Carrying water and chopping wood is the practice, not the interruption of it. The ordinary weight on the shoulders is where the whole thing happens.
You are a small soul carrying a corpse around, he said bluntly, and the point is not contempt for the body but clarity about who is meant to be deciding where it goes.
