Genesis 49:4 Meaning Boiling Over Like Water

Boiling over like water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed, then defiled it. He went up to my couch.

What does Genesis 49:4 mean?

A part of the mind that cannot hold to one purpose loses the very strength it grasped for. Wavering like water, choosing fear one moment and love the next, it forfeits the mastery that only steadiness confers.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A part of the mind that cannot hold to one purpose loses the very strength it grasped for. Wavering like water, choosing fear one moment and love the next, it forfeits the mastery that only steadiness confers. The old transgression here is the ego's habit of seizing what is not its own, reaching into what should be honored and staining it with the belief in separation.

What undoes such a mind is not punishment from outside but its own instability, for a divided will cannot lead. A mind steadies not by force but by choosing one teacher and staying with it.

Water: the wavering mind that cannot hold a single purpose, choosing fear and love by turns and so losing its strength Thy father's bed: the honored ground the ego intrudes upon, the sacred place the belief in separation stains when it reaches where it does not belong

Live Genesis 49:4 today

  1. You already know the one thing you keep starting and dropping. Today, do the smallest version of it rather than redesigning the plan again, and let the plan stay boring.
  2. Stop saying the slightly different version of your yes to different people. Tell one person the actual truth of where you stand and let that be the same thing you say to the next.
  3. When you are stressed and start flipping between tabs, apps and half decisions, close everything but one and stay there for ten minutes. The steadiness is what gives you your strength back, not the speed.

Where am I wavering between two answers, and what would it cost me to just pick one and stay?

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water clears when it is left to settle. Stirring it with constant new intentions is what keeps it cloudy.

Zen · Dogen

Sitting with one practice, wholeheartedly, is itself the whole of awakening. Nothing is added by taking up a second method.

Bhagavad Gita

A divided mind, pulled in many directions, cannot reach steadiness. What settles it is choosing one path and staying on it rather than forcing itself.
