Genesis 5:24 Meaning Enoch Walked with God

Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.

What does Genesis 5:24 mean?

When a mind walks long enough with love, the separate self it once took itself to be simply is not there anymore. This is not death but the quiet disappearance of the ego, dissolved because it was only ever a belief, and the belief has been laid down.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When a mind walks long enough with love, the separate self it once took itself to be simply is not there anymore. This is not death but the quiet disappearance of the ego, dissolved because it was only ever a belief, and the belief has been laid down. Nothing was lost except the illusion of standing apart.

To be taken by love is to remember what was always true, that the mind was never separate from its Source. The vanishing is a homecoming. What ends is only the small self that seemed to walk alone, and what remains is the mind at one with the love it walked beside.

Enoch: the mind that has walked so fully with love it no longer clings to a self set apart from it.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

To walk with God is to keep a steady, living relationship with the center of the soul, the image of God each person carries inside. Most people meet this center only in rare moments. This man kept company with it daily, and over a lifetime his ordinary self grew toward it.

So in the end he "was not found." He did not die like the others. His everyday self had joined so fully with that greater center inside him that no separate person was left to point to. He was taken into the wholeness he had walked beside all along.

A single line stands in for a whole life lived so well that it does not end the way lives usually end. To walk with God is to keep the highest thing in view at every step and orient the entire journey by it. A man who manages that is transformed in some way the plain report of his death cannot capture. The psyche has a capacity for revolutionary change, a lifting out of the ordinary course.

The only misfortune that finally matters is to become corrupted. Enoch is spared that. Whatever the taking means, it stands opposite to the slow rot that claims a person who lets bitterness and compromise hollow him out. He walked in the right direction long enough that the walking became his whole being. A life aimed steadily at what is highest does not merely finish. It arrives somewhere the corrupted never reach.

SUFISM

Sufism

Maʿiyya: God being with you wherever you are The Quran states plainly that God is with a person everywhere they go. Someone who lives by that stops treating God as a place to visit and starts treating God as company on an ordinary day. Years of it add up: work, meals, and sleep all happen in front of someone who is present.

Dhikr: Keeping God in mind Dhikr is the steady habit of remembering God through an ordinary day. Walking beside anyone for years means holding them in mind on dull afternoons, not only in emergencies. After long enough, the remembering settles under everything else a person does, the way you stay aware of someone in the next room.

My servant draws near to me until I love him, and then I am his hearing and his sight: closeness reaches all the way in In this saying God speaks through the Prophet about a person who keeps adding small acts of devotion. Long faithfulness changes something: closeness stops being a warm feeling about God and starts showing in how the person hears, looks, and chooses. Someone far along that road becomes hard to describe on their own terms, because the best of what they do no longer begins with them.

Fanāʾ: The self passing out of view Fanāʾ names the point where a person stops registering their own self in what they do. Everything they want, avoid, and worry over has quietly moved off center, so they are no longer found in the usual places. People who knew them earlier look for the same man and meet someone whose whole weight rests elsewhere.

Jadhb: God's pull Jadhb is the pull from God's side that carries a person further than their own effort could. Walking is something you do; the last stretch happens because someone stronger takes your arm. From outside, a life that ends this way looks sudden, while the person had been carried for a long time already.

Live Genesis 5:24 today

  1. For a few minutes today, do something without narrating it to yourself or planning how you would describe it. See what the moment feels like with nobody watching.
  2. In one conversation, let go of how you are coming across and just listen. The self management falls away and the other person finally gets all of you.
  3. When you feel the urge to defend your image at work, let it pass unanswered once. You will find far less of you was actually at stake.

How much of my energy goes into keeping a self that may not need keeping?
