Genesis 6:2 Meaning God’s Sons Saw That Men’s Daughters Were

God’s sons saw that men’s daughters were beautiful, and they took any that they wanted for themselves as wives.

What does Genesis 6:2 mean?

The higher spiritual thoughts, the sons of God, drop their gaze onto the lower emotions and appetites, the daughters of men, and are captured by their surface beauty. When the mind that belongs above binds itself to what the flesh finds pleasing, it descends and mingles with the sense life instead of ruling it.

The offspring of that mixing are the mongrel powers within, part light and part clay, that make a person heavy and pull awareness down into the body. This is how the divine spark loses altitude, by choosing the fair thing seen with the eyes over the still knowing within.

Sons of God: the higher spiritual thoughts and ideals that belong to the mind above Daughters of men: the lower emotions, appetites, and sense pleasures of the flesh

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When higher, spiritual powers reach down for what is human and beautiful, the spirit is refusing to stay above, pure and untouched. It leans toward the body, toward desire, toward the life it lacks. What looks like heavenly beings taking wives is really the loftiest part of a person turning toward its opposite.

A man who lives only for high ideals often finds himself seized by a plain longing he cannot explain. The high, spiritual side reaches down to the earthly, bodily side and joins it, because a person becomes whole only when the two meet.

  1. When you pick up your phone out of habit tonight, sit with it dark in your hand for a few seconds first and ask what you actually came for. Then do that one thing, or put it down.
  2. In a conversation today, let someone finish without planning your reply or glancing at a screen. Give them the same quality of attention you give the thing that flashes at you.
  3. When a group chat or an email gets under your skin, feel the pull to answer fast, then wait five minutes before typing. The pull will still be there and you will be able to see it clearly.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The senses are strong horses, and the mind that follows wherever they pull loses the reins. The one who holds them steady keeps his own high ground.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When an impression arrives wearing something attractive, do not let it carry you off at once. Ask it to wait, look at it plainly, and you remain the one deciding.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Craving begins as something small and pleasant to the eye, then grows roots and becomes the thing that carries you. What you feed with attention is what grows.
